New Mercedes-Benz GLE family: SUV, Coupe and AMG 53 updates
Mercedes-Benz presents the updated GLE lineup, including SUV, Coupe and AMG 53 versions, with new tech, hybrid engines and digital systems. Explore key details.
The new Mercedes-Benz GLE arrives in three distinct forms at once — a classic SUV, a more expressive Coupé, and a performance-focused AMG version — turning what might seem like a routine update into a comprehensive transformation of the entire model family.
At the core of this shift is a deep technical overhaul. Thousands of components have been revised, the engine lineup updated, and a new software architecture, MB.OS, introduced. This system connects the vehicle to the cloud, supports artificial intelligence, and enables over-the-air updates, effectively turning the GLE into an evolving digital platform. Inside, this is reflected in the MBUX Superscreen with three 12.3-inch displays and a virtual assistant capable of multi-step conversations powered by Google Maps data.
This matters because the GLE remains one of the central players in the premium SUV segment, competing with models like the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne. The update highlights a broader shift in the segment itself, where software, connectivity and digital services are becoming as important as mechanical engineering.
The standard GLE continues to define itself as a versatile SUV. It offers up to seven seats, a luggage capacity of up to 2,055 litres, and towing capability of up to 3.5 tonnes. Ride comfort remains a key focus: E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL analyzes driving conditions up to 1,000 times per second, while a new cloud-based damper system uses Car-to-X data to anticipate road irregularities before they are reached.
The GLE Coupé shifts the emphasis toward design and emotional appeal. Built on the same technical foundation, it adopts a more aggressive silhouette with a sloping roofline and a reworked rear section. Independent assessments confirm that this comes at the cost of rear space, but that trade-off defines the Coupé’s role within the lineup.
At the top of the range sits the AMG GLE 53, pushing the model into the performance SUV category. It introduces electrified powertrains, including a plug-in hybrid delivering up to 585 hp and an electric range of over 90 kilometres (WLTP). This reflects a wider industry trend, where high-performance models increasingly combine strong output with electrification.
Together, the updated GLE family illustrates how a single model line can address multiple use cases — from practicality and comfort to design-driven appeal and performance — while being unified by a shared digital architecture that will shape its future development.
