Gunther Werks 993 Speedster auction reaches $550K
A 1995 Porsche 911 reworked by Gunther Werks into a rare 993 Speedster has reached $550K at auction. Explore details, specs, and market context.
The current bid has already reached $550,000 — for a car that just a few years ago was a standard Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet worth a little over $52,000. Now it appears as one of 25 Gunther Werks Speedster builds, a fully reimagined 993-generation 911 with barely any mileage since completion.
The foundation is a 1995 Porsche 911 from the 993 series, the final air-cooled generation widely regarded as one of the most desirable among collectors. This alone establishes a strong baseline value, as any project built on a 993 tends to occupy a narrow and highly sought-after segment of the classic Porsche market.
The real transformation began after the car changed hands in 2021. It was delivered to Gunther Werks, where it was stripped down to its bare chassis and rebuilt into a Speedster configuration — a body style that effectively never existed in series production for the 993. The result is not just a restomod, but an interpretation of what a modern 993 Speedster might have been if Porsche had fully developed the concept.
The bodywork has been extensively reengineered: the roof, side windows, and original windshield were removed, replaced by a shortened windscreen and a Speedster-style tonneau cover. Most exterior panels were recreated in carbon fiber, while structural reinforcements were added throughout, including integrated support elements behind the cabin.
Power comes from a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six developed by Rothsport Racing specifically for Gunther Werks projects. The engine features individual throttle bodies and MoTeC engine management, with output rated at 430 horsepower. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a six-speed Getrag G50 manual transmission with a limited-slip differential. The car also features adaptive JRZ suspension and Brembo GTR brakes, combining classic architecture with modern performance engineering.
Another key factor is the extremely low mileage — just 19 miles since completion. This effectively positions the car as a newly built example within a limited production run, further increasing its appeal to collectors.
The provenance of this specific car is fully traceable, from a standard cabriolet to a comprehensively rebuilt Speedster. This clear “before and after” history is rare on the auction market and highlights the scale of transformation involved.
Interest in such cars is supported by broader market trends, where Gunther Werks projects — like other high-end restomods — are treated not as modified vehicles but as a distinct class of collectible automobiles. In this case, the absence of a true production Speedster in the 993 generation adds another layer of significance, making such reinterpretations particularly notable within the Porsche lineage.
The auction is still ongoing, and early bidding activity suggests that cars like this operate well beyond the traditional classic 911 market, forming a segment with its own valuation logic.
