Volkswagen marks milestone with 1.5 millionth ID. electric car
Volkswagen has handed over its 1.5 millionth all-electric ID. vehicle, an ID.7 Tourer Pro built in Emden, highlighting the brand’s leading role in electromobility.
Volkswagen has reached a major milestone in its electrification strategy: at the Emden plant, the company handed over the 1.5 millionth all-electric ID. model to a customer from Vechta. The anniversary vehicle was a black ID.7 Tourer Pro with a range of up to 606 kilometers.
The handover ceremony was attended by Lower Saxony’s Minister President Olaf Lies and Volkswagen board members Martin Sander and Kai Grünitz. “1.5 million ID. vehicles delivered – this clearly shows Volkswagen’s pioneering role in electromobility,” emphasized Sander, who is responsible for Sales, Marketing and After Sales.
The journey toward this milestone began almost five years ago, in September 2020, with the delivery of the first ID.3. Since then, the family has grown to include the ID.4, ID.5, the electric ID. Buzz, and in 2024 the ID.7 and ID.7 Tourer. According to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), the ID.7 ranked first among all electric models registered in the country in the first half of 2025.
The Emden plant, where Volkswagen invested more than one billion euros, has been fully converted to electric vehicle production and now serves as a flagship of industrial transformation. In Germany, Volkswagen leads the BEV registration charts, and across Europe the Group also holds a strong position: in the second quarter of 2025, Volkswagen accounted for about 29.5% of Western Europe’s BEV market, ahead of Tesla and Chinese rivals.
Still, as Sander noted, growth could be faster with stronger government incentives. Since the federal subsidy ended in December 2023, the market has shifted: the majority of new electric vehicles in Germany are now registered to corporate fleets, while private buyers remain cautious. Even though charging infrastructure has expanded – with more than 170,000 public points available by July 2025 – skepticism among consumers persists.
Volkswagen is pressing ahead nonetheless. The production version of the compact ID.2all, priced below 25,000 euros, is scheduled for launch in 2026. A year later, the company plans to introduce the entry-level ID. EVERY1 at around 20,000 euros. The goal remains unchanged: to make electric cars a mainstream, affordable, and sustainable option for everyone.
