Volvo ES90 production marks milestone in electric future
Volvo starts ES90 production, its first 800V electric sedan with fast charging, long range and sustainable manufacturing, deliveries in Europe this year
Volvo Cars has officially started series production of its fully electric ES90 sedan, marking a decisive step in the brand’s transition towards an all-electric future. The first deliveries to European customers are scheduled for the end of 2025, with key Asia-Pacific markets to follow.
The ES90 positions itself at the crossroads of several segments. It blends the elegance of a sedan with the adaptability of a fastback and the interior space usually reserved for SUVs. A raised ground clearance and generous cabin dimensions make it equally suitable for urban use and long-distance travel.
Technology is at the heart of the new model. The ES90 is the first Volvo to feature 800-volt architecture, enabling charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes. Depending on configuration, the car achieves up to 700 kilometers of WLTP range, with performance ranging from 6.9 seconds to 100 km/h in the base version down to 4 seconds in the top Performance model.
The car is built on Volvo’s Superset tech stack, a software-driven platform powered by dual NVIDIA Orin processors delivering high AI capacity. A sensor suite, including lidar, radar, cameras and ultrasonics, supports advanced safety and driver assistance functions. Over-the-air updates ensure the ES90 continues to evolve after leaving the factory.
Sustainability plays a central role. Production takes place at Volvo’s Chengdu plant, which runs on climate-neutral energy. According to the July 2025 Life Cycle Assessment, the ES90’s total carbon footprint is around 31 tons of CO₂ equivalent under the average European energy mix, dropping to 26 tons when powered by wind energy—among the lowest of any Volvo to date.
Orders have already opened across numerous European countries, including Germany, the UK, France and Sweden. In Germany, prices start at €71,990, with three trim levels and several powertrain variants available. Compared to rivals such as the Mercedes EQE and BMW i5, the ES90 stands out with its combination of higher range and faster charging at a similar price point.
For Volvo, the ES90 is more than just a new model. It is a strategic step forward, following a record-breaking 2024 when the company posted SEK 27 billion in operating profit. With this launch, Volvo reinforces its commitment to technology and sustainability, strengthening its position in the premium electric vehicle segment.
