Mercedes-Benz launches the GLC 400 4MATIC EQ with a Vegan Society-certified interior, marking the first car to receive official vegan certification.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new GLC 400 4MATIC with EQ Technology, marking a turning point in the way car interiors are conceived. The model is the first in the world to feature a cabin certified by The Vegan Society, taking the discussion around vegan materials from ambitious promises to independent verification.

The certification covers the comprehensive Vegan Package, which extends far beyond seat surfaces. It includes the headliner, door panels, carpets, center console, instrument panel, steering wheel, and more. All of these surfaces are crafted from animal-free materials such as the high-quality Artico leather replica and various textiles. Around one hundred components from Mercedes-Benz suppliers were audited, and where animal-based ingredients were suspected, materials were re-engineered to meet both the brand’s standards and the certification requirements.

The Vegan Society confirmed that no animal-derived substances were used in any stage of production, and strict precautions were taken to prevent cross-contamination. Products also had to comply with the ban on animal testing. Once certified, the Vegan Package was awarded the globally recognized Vegan Trademark. It will be available in the configurator of the new GLC and will later be offered with other models.

For Mercedes-Benz, this move reflects more than a trend—it is part of a long-term strategy. Board member Markus Schäfer highlighted transparency and trust as central to the initiative. Meanwhile, representatives of The Vegan Society emphasized that the project took two years and became the first of its kind in the automotive industry.

This step places Mercedes-Benz at the forefront of a growing shift. Other manufacturers such as Tesla, BMW, and Volvo are also adopting synthetic or recycled materials, yet Mercedes-Benz is the first to receive official third-party certification. The decision could establish a new benchmark for the industry and influence customers who increasingly value ecological and ethical choices when buying a car.
