SEAT & CUPRA inaugurate Circular Economy Hub in Barcelona
SEAT & CUPRA inaugurate a Circular Economy Hub in Barcelona, focused on vehicle dismantling and reuse of components to reduce waste and emissions in the auto industry.
A 5,000 m² facility designed to dismantle vehicles down to their last component is now part of Barcelona’s industrial landscape. SEAT & CUPRA have officially inaugurated their Circular Economy Hub in Zona Franca, a site focused on turning pre-series cars into a source of reusable parts and materials.
The centre has been operational since December 2025, but its institutional opening marks a key step in positioning it as a flagship sustainability project. Vehicles undergo a full process: fluids and hazardous elements are removed, then usable components are carefully dismantled. These parts are packaged, stored and can be reintroduced into production or distributed through partners.
The significance of the project extends beyond a single facility. It directly supports efforts to reduce raw material consumption and emissions in the automotive sector, aligning with broader goals set by both SEAT & CUPRA and the Volkswagen Group. The company reports a 75% reduction in CO₂ emissions at its facilities since 2010 and aims to achieve carbon-neutral production by 2040. At the same time, it targets a 60% reduction in waste by 2025 and a full transition to zero waste by 2050.
The project is backed by public funding, receiving €1.32 million from the PERTE Circular Economy programme, part of the European Union’s NextGenerationEU recovery plan. Total investment in the hub reached €4.85 million, highlighting how circular economy initiatives are being treated as both environmental and economic priorities.
For Barcelona, the hub reinforces the city’s role as a centre for industrial innovation. Zona Franca is evolving into a cluster for advanced manufacturing and sustainable industry, and the new SEAT & CUPRA facility fits into that transformation.
The approach also connects with the company’s broader material strategy. SEAT & CUPRA already use recycled materials such as SEAQUAL yarn made from marine plastic and Dinamica microfibre, which contains around 73% recycled polyester. The Circular Economy Hub extends this logic, helping close the loop on material use within the automotive sector.
