Scania introduces Industrial Batteries for off-road equipment, offering Core and Compact platforms from 21 to 624 kWh. Reliable, European-made solutions.

Scania has taken a decisive step in expanding electrification for heavy-duty machinery with the launch of Scania Industrial Batteries. The new division focuses on battery systems for industrial and off-road applications, including mining, construction, and material handling. Its headquarters are in Sweden, with manufacturing based in Gdańsk, Poland, and an R&D center in Stockholm. Around 260 employees from Northvolt Systems’ former Industrial Division joined Scania when the unit was acquired in April 2025. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The product portfolio spans a wide range of solutions: from the compact Compact 400 with 21 kWh capacity to the larger Core 800 at 97 kWh. Across the Core and Compact platforms, Scania offers configurations reaching up to 624 kWh and 1000 V. Energy density is as high as 225 Wh per liter, with individual modules weighing between 150 and 620 kilograms. All batteries are CE certified and compliant with European safety standards.

Scania emphasizes that these products are more than simple “energy tanks.” They are integrated systems that directly influence performance, efficiency, and uptime. The company has already secured notable partnerships. Core batteries power Dynell’s fully electric ground power units for airports, while Kverneland Energi selected Scania’s solutions for their high energy density and reliability. At Bauma 2025, Scania also showcased joint projects with manufacturers of heavy self-propelled platforms, underlining its commitment to broadening the OEM network.

The market for electric off-road equipment is expanding rapidly. Research reports suggest that by 2030 it could grow two- to fourfold, depending on the sector and methodology. In Europe, regulations such as Stage V for non-road mobile machinery and the push for “zero-emission construction sites” provide additional momentum. In this context, Scania’s modular battery systems serve as a practical tool to ease the transition for operators toward cleaner and more cost-efficient technologies.

With the combination of Scania’s engineering expertise, production facilities in Poland, R&D capacity in Sweden, and an established record of thousands of delivered battery systems accounting for over 12 million operating hours, the company is positioning itself to accelerate the adoption of electrification in the toughest environments—from mines to construction sites.
