Volvo FH Aero and FM achieve top safety scores in Euro NCAP
Volvo FH Aero and FM 6x2 received five stars in Euro NCAP’s 2025 heavy truck tests, confirming leadership in safety standards without compromise.
Volvo Trucks has once again confirmed its leadership in safety, as the Volvo FH Aero 6x2 and Volvo FM 6x2 achieved the maximum five-star rating in the latest Euro NCAP crash assessment for heavy trucks. This follows their 2024 success, when Volvo was the only manufacturer to reach the top rating at the program’s launch.
The second round of tests focused on 6x2 rigid chassis and evaluated three main areas: safe driving, crash avoidance, and post-crash measures. Each category included detailed checks, from speed assistance and driver monitoring to pedestrian and cyclist detection. Both Volvo models not only secured five stars but also earned the CitySafe recognition, highlighting their ability to protect vulnerable road users in urban environments.
Competitors delivered mixed results. Mercedes-Benz improved its Actros to a five-star score, while Renault, Scania and others stopped at four stars. DAF and MAN settled at three. In this context, Volvo managed to maintain its lead and reinforce its reputation as the benchmark in truck safety.
Key to this achievement were technical solutions such as advanced automatic emergency braking that responds to cars and cyclists in turning scenarios, enhanced direct vision through low windows and camera systems, and a wide range of driver assistance features. Together, these innovations allowed Volvo to meet the most demanding criteria.
Euro NCAP emphasizes that trucks make up only a small fraction of Europe’s vehicle fleet yet are responsible for a significant share of fatal crashes. The independent rating gives fleet operators and buyers a clear guide to the safest models available. For Volvo, the result is another step toward its Vision Zero strategy, the long-term goal of eliminating fatal accidents involving its vehicles.
Although the company has reached the highest score twice, executives admit the work is far from over. By 2028, Euro NCAP plans to expand the protocols to include full crash tests for heavy vehicles, setting new challenges for the industry. Volvo, judging by its statements, intends to meet them as a pioneer.
