Kia Issues Recall for 2025 EV9 Due to Rear Drive System Malfunction
Kia is recalling 342 units of the 2025 EV9 due to a defect in the rear drive unit, which may cause power loss. Learn more about the issue, affected models, and the recall process.
Kia has announced a recall affecting 342 units of the 2025 EV9, its three-row electric SUV. The issue stems from a defective rear drive unit that can result in power loss and reduced acceleration.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem is linked to improperly welded motor shafts, which were assembled by a supplier. This flaw can lead to shaft damage, impairing the transfer of torque from the motor to the wheels. Affected drivers may experience abnormal transmission noises and see a “Check AWD/4WD” warning message on the dashboard.
Although hundreds of vehicles are subject to the recall, Kia estimates that only around 4%—approximately 14 units—are likely to have the defect. The issue exclusively affects dual-motor, all-wheel-drive versions of the EV9 produced at Kia’s Georgia plant in 2024.
To fix the problem, Kia will replace the rear drive unit free of charge. Official owner notifications will begin on March 7, 2025. Those wishing to verify if their vehicle is part of the recall can contact Kia’s customer service at 800-333-4542 or visit the automaker’s official recall website using recall reference number SC337.
This is not the first recall for the EV9. Previously, both 2024 and 2025 models were recalled due to missing seat bolts and failures in digital instrument clusters. Such recurring issues may raise concerns among owners and prospective buyers regarding the vehicle’s reliability, particularly given its recent market debut.
Whether this situation will impact Kia’s reputation in the EV segment remains to be seen. However, the company has responded promptly to the defect and is working to minimize disruptions for affected owners.
