BMW becomes first in Germany to receive DCAS approval for Level 2 systems
BMW Group secures DCAS approval for its new Level 2 driver assistance, debuting on the BMW iX3 with Motorway Assistant and Symbiotic Drive features across Europe.
The BMW Group has become the first car manufacturer in Germany to receive international approval under UN Regulation No. 171 (DCAS) for Level 2 driver assistance systems. This milestone paves the way for the broader introduction of “hands-off” technologies, notably the Motorway Assistant, which allows drivers to rest their hands in their laps at speeds of up to 130 km/h. The new BMW iX3, representing the Neue Klasse generation, will be the first model to feature this system.
The DCAS regulation, which came into force on 22 September 2024, established international standards for sustained driver assistance: systems that can support both longitudinal and lateral control while the driver remains attentive and ready to intervene. BMW’s approval marks the first granted in Germany under these rules, eliminating the need for national exemptions previously issued by the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA).
With DCAS approval, BMW is expanding the reach and capability of its Motorway Assistant. The system can now suggest lane changes using BMW Maps data, confirmed by a simple glance in the mirror, and remains active through junctions and exits. This allows for smoother and safer travel on European motorways without constant steering input.
In urban settings, the new iX3 introduces traffic light recognition that stops automatically at red lights and moves off again when the signal turns green. These features will gradually be rolled out to additional markets as certifications proceed.
BMW emphasizes that safety and cooperation between driver and technology remain central. Under the Symbiotic Drive concept, the system complements rather than replaces human control. The iX3 is also the world’s first model equipped with symbiotic brakes, backed by more than two dozen patent applications developed by BMW engineers.
The Motorway Assistant recently earned the Tech Award 2025 from the German magazine auto motor und sport in the “Comfort Assistance Systems” category. Industry observers see this recognition as a milestone toward standardizing safe Level 2 driving functions across Europe.
