Hyundai Motor Group and EDB Join Forces for Low-Carbon Technology Development
Hyundai Motor Group and Singapore’s Economic Development Board sign MoU to develop low-carbon and hydrogen technologies, strengthening cooperation on clean energy.
Hyundai Motor Group has taken another step toward its clean energy ambitions by signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Singapore’s Economic Development Board (EDB). The agreement focuses on developing low-carbon solutions, including hydrogen technologies, and strengthens the long-standing collaboration between the two sides.
The partnership builds on the Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS), opened in 2023 in Jurong. This advanced facility serves as Hyundai’s global testbed for digital manufacturing and sustainability-driven innovation. As part of Singapore’s Green Plan 2030, the alliance aims to explore the use of the nation’s existing pipeline infrastructure for hydrogen distribution, addressing logistical challenges while promoting efficiency.
Although financial details were not disclosed, previous reports indicate that Hyundai invested around $400 million in the development of HMGICS. The new MoU is expected to expand the center’s role in hydrogen-related projects, supported by Singapore’s strong network of startups and research institutions such as NTU and A*STAR, which have collaborated with Hyundai on robotics and AI initiatives.
According to Hyundai Vice President Jaeha Park, the cooperation with EDB underscores hydrogen’s role as a cornerstone of future energy systems. Singapore’s ecosystem, he noted, offers an ideal environment to demonstrate how clean technologies can be integrated into modern infrastructure.
The new agreement aligns with Hyundai’s global Hydrogen Vision 2040, which promotes widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered systems across industries. Singapore’s plan to meet up to half of its energy demand with hydrogen by mid-century highlights the nation’s strategic importance in this global shift. Together, Hyundai and EDB are positioning themselves at the forefront of hydrogen innovation in Asia, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future.
