Hyundai Motor Group opens its new €150m Square Campus in Germany to develop next-generation EV, ADAS, and mobility technologies for European markets.

Hyundai Motor Group has inaugurated its new research complex, Square Campus, in Russelsheim am Main, Germany, marking the most significant investment in its European engineering base since the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Center (HMETC) opened in 2003. The €150 million facility is designed to accelerate the development of advanced technologies tailored for Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis models in Europe.

Covering 25,000 square meters, Square Campus embodies Hyundai’s long-term commitment to Europe. The site features the Group’s largest semi-anechoic chamber for noise, vibration, and harshness testing, along with advanced laboratories for electric and hybrid powertrain evaluation, climate simulations, and electronic systems development. It also includes an EV charging lab, a state-of-the-art driving simulator, and facilities for ADAS and cybersecurity testing.

More than a technical hub, Square Campus represents Hyundai’s focus on sustainability. The building incorporates recycled materials, photovoltaic panels, and heat pump systems, aligning with the Group’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2045. These features make the new site a model of environmentally conscious engineering.

Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of HMETC and a former Ford Performance engineer, emphasized that the new complex “provides greater independence and flexibility” while strengthening cooperation with Hyundai’s main R&D hub in Namyang, Korea. With its indoor testing capabilities, Square Campus allows engineers to conduct assessments regardless of weather conditions, shortening development cycles from prototype to production.

The expansion also brings growth in talent and infrastructure. HMETC now employs more than 500 specialists, and its teams are closely integrated with the Group’s test facilities at the Nürburgring, which were expanded in early 2025. Together, these sites form a stronger European R&D network, reinforcing Russelsheim’s role as a hub of automotive innovation and Hyundai’s position as a technological leader in sustainable mobility.
