Toyota Racing Development Extends Engineering from Track to Factory
Toyota Racing Development (TRD) uses its motorsport precision to manufacture Tacoma and Tundra upper control arms, as reported by Toyota USA Newsroom.
Toyota Racing Development (TRD), long associated with the thrill of motorsport, is steadily extending its influence beyond the racetrack. Today, TRD is applying its high-performance engineering expertise to the development of components that serve everyday drivers. One of its latest ventures involves producing upper control arms for the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra—critical parts that directly affect handling and stability.
This effort is carried out in close collaboration with Production Engineering, Toyota Motor North America Research & Development (R&D), and several key suppliers. TRD’s manufacturing facilities in Costa Mesa and Irvine, California—once known primarily for producing NASCAR components—are now building precision parts for road vehicles. According to Greg Ozmai, general manager of TRD Operations, the precision and efficiency honed in racing are now helping Toyota elevate the standards of its mainstream production.
A video released by Toyota USA Newsroom showcases how TRD engineers bring motorsport principles to the production floor. The adoption of advanced machining solutions from GF Machining Solutions has enhanced flexibility and precision, while TRD’s experience bridges the gap between research and production teams.
The initiative highlights more than just the transfer of racing know-how to everyday vehicles. It also aligns with Toyota’s broader strategy to reinforce its North American manufacturing network. Alongside major investments in battery production in North Carolina and expanded assembly operations in Indiana, TRD’s contribution underscores the growing role of performance engineering in Toyota’s industrial future.
