Ford Tourneo Custom Enters Service with NRW Police Fleet
Ford Pro reports the first deliveries of Tourneo Custom patrol cars to North Rhine–Westphalia police, with up to 1,400 vehicles planned by 2028.
Police in the German state of North Rhine–Westphalia have begun deploying the first Ford Tourneo Custom vehicles as new patrol cars. The initial handover took place in mid-December and marks the start of a broader fleet renewal programme running through 2028, under which up to 1,400 vehicles are planned.
The police selected the passenger version of the Tourneo Custom, which is based on the Transit Custom – Europe’s best-selling vehicle in its segment according to S&P Global Mobility data for 2024. The chosen specification features five seats, sliding doors on both sides and a luggage compartment offering 2,669 litres of space for police equipment.
All vehicles delivered to North Rhine–Westphalia are powered by a 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine producing 170 hp, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and an intelligent all-wheel-drive system. Torque is distributed between the front and rear axles in 20-millisecond intervals, a setup designed to improve stability and traction in demanding driving conditions. Independent rear suspension further contributes to precise handling and confident road manners.
A key focus of the new patrol cars is the integration of police-specific technology. Using the Ford Pro Vehicle Integration System, functions such as emergency lighting can be controlled directly via the 13-inch touchscreen in the dashboard. The system is based on an interface module that gives licensed vehicle conversion partners direct access to the vehicle’s electrical architecture, simplifying the installation and operation of additional equipment.
The introduction of the Tourneo Custom builds on a long-standing partnership between Ford and the police force in North Rhine–Westphalia. Since 2019, more than 1,200 Ford S-Max vehicles have been in service, and the addition of the Tourneo Custom expands the fleet with a more versatile, multi-purpose patrol vehicle tailored to modern policing requirements.
