ZEEKR Introduces G-Pilot Level 3 Autonomous Driving with NVIDIA Thor

Chinese EV brand ZEEKR has taken a significant step forward in autonomous driving by introducing its G-Pilot system with Level 3 capability. The technology was unveiled in China, where the automaker detailed its features and demonstrated its operation. The first model equipped with G-Pilot will be the new SUV, ZEEKR 9X. Its official debut is scheduled for the Shanghai Auto Show in April, with mass production set to begin in the second half of 2025. The model arrives as China’s autonomous vehicle market is poised for rapid growth — forecasts predict an increase from $17 billion in 2024 to over $170 billion by 2033.

At the core of G-Pilot is NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor, a next-generation platform offering up to 1,400 TOPs of computing power. This allows ZEEKR not only to deliver full Level 3 driving but also to scale the technology to other models in its lineup through over-the-air (OTA) updates.

One of the system’s standout features is the General Automated Evasion System (G-AES), which is designed to autonomously avoid obstacles at speeds between 80 km/h and 130 km/h (50-81 mph). Additional functions include smart driving modes and full Vehicle-to-Parking (V2P) capability.

The shift to Level 3 autonomy requires a solid regulatory framework. China is already moving forward — new regulations in Beijing come into force in April, setting standards for Level 3 and higher vehicles. In Europe, the UNECE R157 regulation defines the operational conditions for similar systems.

While the G-Pilot system will debut with Level 3 automation exclusively on the ZEEKR 9X, the company plans to expand this capability to additional models in the future. The automaker is also focused on strengthening its presence in Europe, with three upcoming models internally codenamed EX, DX, and CC. Against the backdrop of rising competition—from BYD’s rapid advancements to Pony.ai’s expansion plans—the introduction of G-Pilot could play a crucial role in solidifying ZEEKR’s position in the global EV market.
