Rolls-Royce starts £300M expansion at Goodwood, boosting bespoke and electric car production. Structure to be completed in 9 months. Read the full story.

The start of above-ground construction for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars’ latest expansion project was marked by a symbolic gesture: Chief Executive Chris Brownridge personally signed the first steel column to be installed at the site. The act revives a tradition dating back to Sir Henry Royce, who signed off on key components himself.

The £300 million investment is the largest single development at the company’s Goodwood headquarters since it opened in 2003. The structural framework, comprising 437 columns, is expected to be completed within nine months, paving the way for interior fit-out and the installation of advanced production equipment. The new 40,000m² facility will house a state-of-the-art Exterior Surface Finish Centre, along with bespoke and coachbuild production areas and infrastructure for battery-electric vehicle assembly.

A temporary “Construction Hub” is already operational, coordinating efforts between Rolls-Royce teams and independent contractors—though the companies involved have not been publicly disclosed.

In keeping with the brand’s long-term sustainability strategy, the building will be clad in durable, low-impact materials and topped with a living roof. It will also feature bio-solar energy generation and air-source heat pumps. These choices reflect the same environmental priorities evident in the original Goodwood plant, which boasts the UK’s largest green roof.

Customization continues to play a pivotal role in Rolls-Royce’s growth. In 2024, the average value of bespoke content per vehicle increased by 10%, a record that underscores the rising demand for highly individualized luxury vehicles. This demand has directly influenced the scope and scale of the expansion project.

While specific projections for output growth have not been disclosed, the investment clearly aims to scale up the brand’s capacity to meet sustained demand and to prepare for a future focused on electrification and deep personalization.
