How Skoda Developed the Playful Chassis of the Fabia 130
Skoda Auto explains how the Fabia 130 chassis, steering, ESC Sport, and aerodynamics were tuned to deliver sharper handling and balanced everyday performance.
The Skoda Fabia 130 is a rare example of an anniversary model that goes far beyond badges and visual accents. It is the result of deliberate engineering work, giving a compact road car a character closely linked to the brand’s motorsport heritage.
The car is based on the fourth-generation Fabia and the MQB platform. Short overhangs, compact dimensions, and a wide track were seen by engineers as an ideal foundation for a more dynamic version. It is no coincidence that the same architecture underpins the Fabia RS Rally2, creating a clear conceptual link between road and competition cars.
Steering calibration plays a central role in the Fabia 130’s character. The model is offered exclusively with 18-inch wheels, allowing the chassis and steering to be tuned without compromise. While the steering ratio itself remains unchanged, the electromechanical power steering has been recalibrated. At low speeds, the behaviour closely mirrors that of the standard Fabia, but at medium speeds the response becomes sharper, and at higher speeds the steering gains weight and stability while remaining linear and predictable.
Aerodynamics also contribute to stability. A front splitter and rear spoiler reduce lift and become increasingly effective as speed rises. Combined with the lowered sport suspension, these elements create a composed, planted feel that supports confident driving.
Electronic systems are tuned to support engagement rather than suppress it. The ESC Sport mode allows greater wheel slip and later intervention, enabling controlled, mild oversteer in appropriate conditions while maintaining clearly defined safety limits. The XDS system on the front axle further enhances agility by simulating a limited-slip differential through selective braking of the inside wheel in a corner.
Power comes from an upgraded 1.5 TSI evo2 engine delivering 130 kW (177 hp) and 250 Nm of torque. Improved elasticity is evident in everyday driving, with acceleration from 60 to 100 km/h taking 3.8 seconds and 80 to 120 km/h completed in 4.8 seconds. Top speed reaches 228 km/h, while combined WLTP fuel consumption remains between 5.5 and 5.6 l/100 km.
Design and interior details underline the technical substance. Darkened headlights, red brake calipers, a black roof, twin exhaust outlets, and subtle “130” badging define the exterior. Inside, supportive sport seats and a driver-focused layout deliver a motorsport-inspired atmosphere without sacrificing daily comfort.
The Fabia 130 does not aim to replace full RS models or become an extreme track-focused car. Its strength lies in balance. It remains practical for everyday use while clearly demonstrating that Skoda Motorsport’s engineering philosophy is an integral part of its character rather than a superficial reference.
