A rare and technically intricate Porsche 911 from the 993 generation has surfaced on Bring a Trailer — a 1997 Carrera Cabriolet transformed by Gunther Werks into a Speedster under its limited production program. This example is one of just 25 Speedster commissions, with the build completed in 2024.

The starting point was a factory 911 Carrera Cabriolet, yet the final result goes far beyond cosmetic modification. The car was stripped to its steel unibody and reinforced before receiving extensive carbon-fiber body panels. The folding roof, side windows, and original windshield were removed, replaced by a shortened reinforced windscreen frame and a Speedster-style tonneau cover, fundamentally altering the car’s profile.

Finished in Cream White and wrapped in XPEL Ultimate Protection self-healing film, the exterior incorporates a carbon-fiber splitter, a ducktail spoiler with integrated air intake, nickel-plated mirrors and door handles, and LED taillights. The 18-inch center-lock wheels feature carbon-fiber rims, magnesium centers, and titanium fasteners.

At the heart of the build lies a Rothsport Racing-built 4.0-liter air-cooled flat-six. Specifications include Mahle pistons, billet cylinders and crankshaft, forged connecting rods, individual throttle bodies, and two-stage MoTeC engine management. Output is rated by Gunther Werks at 430 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. A lightweight titanium exhaust system with equal-length headers and 3D-printed multi-layer Inconel outlets completes the mechanical package.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a six-speed Getrag G50 manual transaxle fitted with custom gear ratios and a limited-slip differential. The chassis features electronically adaptive JRZ suspension with remote reservoirs, uprated control arms, and a hydraulic front-axle lift system. Braking is handled by Brembo GTR components with six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers.

Inside, exposed carbon fiber contrasts with beige leather and Alcantara upholstery. The carbon-fiber bucket seats feature houndstooth inserts, the rear seats have been deleted, and the Travel Package adds a single-piece carbon-fiber center console. A Porsche Classic stereo system and climate control round out the interior. The odometer shows just 311 miles since completion of the build.

The listing cites a total build cost of $922,713 and a clean Carfax report. At the time of writing, bidding had reached $500,000.

The significance of this lot lies not only in its limited production number but in the depth of its transformation — a comprehensive reinterpretation of the 993 platform that retains air-cooled character while integrating contemporary engineering solutions. It stands as a modern restomod shaped around the historic Speedster concept, executed with extensive structural and mechanical revision.
