Toyota Australia announces a recall of 11,020 LandCruiser 300 vehicles over a transmission software issue affecting safety. Learn what owners should do.

Toyota Australia has announced a recall affecting approximately 11,020 LandCruiser 300 vehicles. The campaign is classified as a safety recall and aims to ensure the correct operation of the Transmission ECT-ECU software.

According to the manufacturer’s official statement, under certain conditions the software issue could increase the risk of a crash and even a fire. For that reason, owners of affected vehicles are advised to contact authorised dealers to receive a free software update.

The remedy consists of reprogramming the transmission control module. Toyota states that the procedure will be carried out at no cost, and affected customers will be contacted directly. The press release also notes that owners can check their vehicle status against the VIN table provided in the campaign’s Q&A section.

A similar recall has been announced for Lexus models, including the LX 500d and LX 600. Lexus Australia reports that approximately 589 vehicles are involved locally. On other markets, the scale varies: in the United States the recall covers around 4,400 Lexus LX 600 vehicles, while in Canada it affects about 626 units from the 2025–2026 model years.

In North American statements, the software condition is described as potentially leading to transmission damage, loss of drive at higher speeds and leakage of transmission fluid, which could increase the risk of a crash or fire.

The case highlights how modern large SUVs rely heavily on synchronised electronic control systems. Even without a structural mechanical defect, a software inconsistency can have direct safety implications, prompting swift action from the manufacturer.
