Citroen Revises C5 Aircross, Berlingo and Vans
Citroen announces engine updates for C5 Aircross, Berlingo, SpaceTourer and Jumpy, including hybrid, diesel and electric changes. Learn what’s new.
Citroen has revised the engine line-up of several key models, reinforcing its multi-energy strategy at a time when regulatory pressure and market demand are evolving simultaneously. The adjustments are designed to offer flexibility for families, leisure users and professionals, while also anticipating the broader framework of the upcoming Euro 7 regulation, which expands oversight beyond tailpipe emissions to include brake and tyre particle limits and stricter durability requirements.
The most visible change concerns the C5 Aircross Plug-in Hybrid. Its output is now officially rated at 225 hp instead of 195 hp. Importantly, no technical modifications have been made to the powertrain; the adjustment reflects the methodology linked to future regulatory protocols. The system combines a 1.6-litre 150 hp petrol engine with a 125 hp electric motor integrated into a seven-speed eDCS automatic gearbox.
With a 21.5 kWh battery (17.8 kWh usable), the plug-in hybrid delivers up to 113 km of electric range in urban driving and 96 km in mixed conditions. Total range exceeds 1,100 km, supported by a 55-litre fuel tank. Combined-cycle consumption is rated at 2.5 l/100 km, with CO₂ emissions of 55 g/km. The model also maintains a towing capacity of up to 1,550 kg and features Progressive Hydraulic Cushions suspension, Advanced Comfort seats and the Drive Assist 2.0 system.
Berlingo returns to a full multi-energy offering. A 110 hp turbocharged petrol engine (205 Nm) with manual transmission and Stop & Start joins the range, delivering a combined fuel consumption of 6.3 l/100 km. Diesel variants, BlueHDi 100 and 130, are also reintroduced. BlueHDi technology relies on SCR systems using AdBlue, significantly reducing NOx emissions.
Diesel versions emit between 138 and 151 g CO₂/km. In France, families with three or more children benefit from a reduction of 20 g CO₂/km and 200 kg of taxable weight per child under the ecological penalty scheme, potentially avoiding the malus depending on configuration.
The fully electric e-Berlingo retains its 50 kWh LFP battery and offers up to 340 km of WLTP range. LFP chemistry is known for durability and thermal stability, although it provides lower energy density than NMC alternatives. Fast charging at 100 kW enables a 20–80% recharge in around 30 minutes.
SpaceTourer and Jumpy adopt a new 2.2-litre diesel engine compliant with Euro 6E standards. Available in 150 hp and 180 hp versions, the 150 hp unit delivers 370 Nm of torque from 1,500 rpm. CO₂ emissions are reduced to 170 g/km with manual transmission, and fuel consumption stands at 6.5 l/100 km.
Both models are built on the modular EMP2 platform, supporting combustion and electric drivetrains. Electric variants feature a 100 kW motor and battery options of 50 or 75 kWh, offering up to 350 km of WLTP range. A 100 kW fast charger can replenish the battery to 80% in well under an hour.
Within the broader industry context, these adjustments align with Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 plan, unveiled in 2022, which outlines an ambitious electrification roadmap for Europe. At the same time, the continued optimisation of petrol and diesel engines signals a pragmatic transition strategy, acknowledging the diverse energy landscape that still characterises the European market.
Citroen’s latest revisions therefore underline a balanced approach: electrification expands, but efficiency improvements across all powertrains remain central to the brand’s offering.
