Explore the Audi A3 facelift: upgraded interior, tech improvements, and performance tweaks make it a strong contender in the family hatchback class.

With the 2024 facelift, Audi presents a more mature and refined version of its fourth-generation A3 Sportback—an update that subtly but effectively addresses earlier criticisms. While it doesn’t rewrite the rulebook, it clearly aims to reinforce Audi’s presence in the competitive family hatchback market.

Design: Sharpening Familiar Lines

The visual changes are discreet but purposeful. A frameless grille and more pronounced air vents (though still decorative) introduce a sportier front fascia. New LED headlights offer customizable light signatures, adding a touch of personalization. At the rear, S-line trims benefit from redesigned taillights and a diffuser styled after the RS3—more for flair than function.

Interior: A Step Forward, Yet Shadows of the Past Remain

The biggest transformation takes place inside. The previous A3 drew criticism for its regression in cabin quality compared to the third-generation model—often seen as a benchmark for premium interiors. In this refresh, Audi makes amends with recycled polyester fabric on the dashboard, upgraded door trims, and more ambient lighting. The virtual cockpit and physical climate controls remain, to the relief of those weary of touchscreen overload.

Yet, the car can’t quite reclaim the solidity of its predecessor. Some plastic elements and parts of the center console still fall short of the premium promise. It’s a good cabin by today’s standards—on par with the Mercedes A-Class—but not a class leader. BMW’s 1 Series and the less expensive Mazda 3 arguably offer more tactile interiors.

Comfort and Practicality: Ergonomic Strengths, Rear Limitations

From behind the wheel, the A3 continues to shine. Its driving position is customizable and now includes standard lumbar support. Rear passenger space, however, remains average. Taller occupants may find headroom tight, and the middle seat offers little comfort. Practicality is a mixed bag—useful features like a height-adjustable boot floor and underfloor storage are offset by a modest boot capacity that lags behind rivals like the Scoda Octavia and Mercedes A-Class.

Technology: Incremental, But Sensible

Audi’s infotainment system, via a 10.1-inch touchscreen, gets minor software enhancements, though most drivers will default to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Key features such as cruise control, heated front seats, and power-folding mirrors come as standard even on entry trims, making the base A3 a compelling option.

Driving Experience: Poised and Composed

Handling is where the A3 excels. Regardless of trim, the car maintains a planted and balanced feel through corners. Even the base Sport model delivers an engaging drive. S-line and Black Edition trims dial up the stiffness for added sportiness without sacrificing comfort—though the softest ride is still found in the entry-level version.

Engines: Petrol, Diesel, and the New Plug-in Hybrid

The engine lineup remains familiar. The 30 TFSI (1.5L petrol) is the entry point, while the more powerful 35 TFSI delivers a well-rounded experience with brisk performance and flexibility. The 2.0L diesel variant suits high-mileage drivers but comes at a premium. A newly added plug-in hybrid promises over 80 miles of electric range—an impressive figure—but real-world testing remains pending.

Pricing and Verdict

Prices have inched up, as expected, but the A3 remains slightly cheaper than its premium rivals. Still, budget-conscious buyers might find better value in alternatives like the Seat Leon or Toyota Corolla—the latter offering standout fuel economy and comfort.

The 2024 Audi A3 doesn’t revolutionize the segment but smartens up where it counts. It remains one of the most well-rounded premium hatchbacks on sale today, striking a solid balance between performance, practicality, and prestige.
