As part of the NYCxDesign Festival, taking place from May 15 to 21, 2025, Mercedes-AMG has unveiled an unexpected and bold collaboration with the Brooklyn-based art collective MSCHF. At first glance, the partnership may seem far removed from the automotive world, but it takes shape in a limited collection of furniture and accessories crafted from original AMG performance components.
The project, titled Not for Automotive Use, explores how precisely engineered elements from high-performance vehicles can be transformed into art objects without losing their mechanical charisma. At the core is a blend of AMG’s engineering precision and MSCHF’s radical design philosophy—famed for viral concepts like the Big Red Boots.
Sculptural pieces such as a floor lamp operated by a seatbelt buckle, a chair made from three AMG headrests, and even a sofa featuring functional headlights and turn signals nod to the 1960s Italian Radical Design movement. But this is more than a playful exercise in aesthetics—it’s a deliberate reimagining of everyday objects, paying homage to Achille Castiglioni, the legendary designer known for repurposing utilitarian forms into cultural icons.
The furniture collection is made exclusively to order and available in very limited quantities. Each piece was co-developed with AMG’s design team in Affalterbach, Germany. Complementing the main installation is a capsule line of merchandise featuring t-shirts, baseball caps, work pants, and even an air freshener shaped like an apple tree—a reference to “Affalterbach,” which means “apple tree on the brook” in Old High German.
In a notable first, MSCHF has opened the doors to its Greenpoint studio for the premiere. Previously cloaked in secrecy, the location now serves as both exhibition space and narrative backdrop—an integral part of the installation and the birthplace of the collection itself.
The NYCxDesign Festival, which includes over 280 events citywide, provides the ideal backdrop for such a boundary-pushing project. The Mercedes-AMG x MSCHF collaboration is not merely a display of avant-garde design but a vivid example of how the lines between technology, art, and everyday life continue to blur.
