Top 3 best-selling electric cars in 2025: Tesla and Geely
Tesla Model Y, Tesla Model 3 and Geely Geome Xingyuan led global electric car sales in 2025, according to industry market data. Explore the ranking and sales figures.
In the global ranking of electric vehicle sales for 2025, a familiar pattern emerged once again: Tesla models dominated the top positions, while a new entrant from Chinese manufacturer Geely unexpectedly secured third place. The annual results highlight not only the balance of power among automakers but also the evolving structure of the global electric vehicle market.
The undisputed leader was the Tesla Model Y. By the end of 2025, the electric crossover recorded 1,085,521 units sold, maintaining its status as the world’s best-selling electric car. Despite retaining the top position, the model showed slightly weaker dynamics compared with the previous year: sales declined by about 7.5%, and its share of the BEV market fell from 10.9% to 7.9%. China remained the largest source of demand, while the United States accounted for around 30% of all Model Y sales. South Korea, Turkey, and Canada followed with smaller shares in the global distribution. In December 2025 alone, the model recorded 129,650 sales, slightly below the level seen a year earlier.
Second place went to the Tesla Model 3, which has long been one of the most established electric sedans on the market. In 2025 the model achieved 499,685 global sales. Compared with the previous year, deliveries decreased by about 5.5%, bringing the model’s share of the global BEV market to approximately 3.6%. The geography of demand largely mirrors that of the Model Y: China remains the largest market with 40.1% of sales, followed by the United States with 31%. Among European markets, the United Kingdom accounted for about 3.1%. In December 2025, Model 3 deliveries reached 55,198 units.
The most notable newcomer in the top tier of the ranking was the Geely Geome Xingyuan. The model secured third place globally with 473,948 units sold. Remarkably, the vehicle entered the market relatively recently, with initial sales beginning only in September 2024. During 2025 the model recorded rapid growth of roughly 800%, raising its share of the global BEV market to around 3.5%. Nearly all sales were concentrated in China, which accounted for about 99.5% of the total. Outside China, the model has been sold in only a few markets, including Brazil, Mauritius, and Colombia. In December 2025 alone, Geely sold 43,185 units, representing a year-on-year increase of 161.9%.
The 2025 figures confirm that Tesla continues to hold a strong position in the global electric vehicle market, occupying two spots in the top three. At the same time, the rapid rise of Chinese manufacturers is becoming increasingly visible. The appearance of the Geely Xingyuan in the ranking—despite launching just a year earlier—illustrates how quickly new models can scale in the BEV segment. The manufacturer has already indicated plans to expand the model’s presence to major European markets in 2026, a move that could reshape the competitive landscape in the coming years.
