1970 Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF Fanalone Appears on Bring a Trailer
A rare 1970 Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF Fanalone, one of 1,258 built for rally homologation, is listed for auction on Bring a Trailer in the United States. See details of the historic coupe.
One of just 1,258 Lancia Fulvia 1.6 HF “Fanalone” coupes built for rally homologation is currently being auctioned on Bring a Trailer in the United States. The 1970 car, has already received a bid of $12,000 with several days remaining before the auction closes.
The Fulvia Coupé HF 1.6 was produced between 1969 and 1970 and earned the nickname “Fanalone” because of its distinctive large inner headlights measuring 170 mm in diameter. The version was created as a homologation special for rally competition and featured lightweight construction with aluminum body panels, a stripped interior, and a more powerful engine setup.
This particular example underwent repainting and interior work before being used in various European rally events between 2009 and 2014. The car was acquired in France in 2014 by the current owner and imported to the United States in 2016. It is now offered by a dealer in California.
Power comes from a narrow-angle 1.6-liter V4 engine equipped with dual Solex carburetors. In factory specification, the engine produced about 115 horsepower. Power is sent to the front wheels through a five-speed dogleg manual transmission. The engine was rebuilt in 2015, while the gearbox was rebuilt in 2010 and again after the current owner acquired the car in 2014.
The car carries several rally-oriented modifications. These include a bolt-in roll cage, fixed-back bucket seats, OMP multi-point harnesses, a Brantz rally computer, a fire-suppression system, and auxiliary Marchal driving lights. The car rides on 13-inch Cromodora alloy wheels fitted with Michelin tires.
The Fulvia Coupé itself was designed by Piero Castagnero and became a significant model in Lancia’s history. Soon after its introduction in the 1960s, the car began achieving notable success in motorsport. One of the most famous victories came when a Fulvia Coupé 1.6 HF won the 1972 Rallye Monte-Carlo.
That victory helped establish Lancia’s long-term reputation in rally competition. The company later built on this success with models such as the Lancia Stratos, Rally 037, and the Delta.
Today the Fulvia 1.6 HF Fanalone is considered a rare collector’s car. Auction results show that values can be significant; for example, one example sold at a Broad Arrow auction in 2024 for $79,520.
The current Bring a Trailer auction is scheduled to end on March 21, when the final price will indicate how the market values this particular example of Lancia’s historic rally coupe.
