Hyundai and Kia expand partnership with NVIDIA to develop AI-driven autonomous driving, from Level 2 systems to Level 4 robotaxi services. Learn key details.

Hyundai, Kia and NVIDIA are moving toward a full transition to autonomous driving — from advanced driver assistance to robotaxi services without human involvement. The companies have expanded their strategic partnership, combining Hyundai Motor Group’s software-defined vehicle capabilities with NVIDIA’s computing platforms and AI technologies.

This is not a limited integration but the creation of a unified system. NVIDIA’s technologies will be introduced into Hyundai and Kia vehicles starting from Level 2 and above, gradually expanding into more complex driving scenarios. At the same time, Level 4 development continues through Motional, Hyundai’s joint venture already working on robotaxi services based on the IONIQ 5.

The importance of this move lies in the approach itself. The companies are building a complete development cycle for autonomous driving: from collecting real-world vehicle data to training models and deploying them into production cars. This data-driven process is widely seen as critical in the industry, as the volume and quality of data directly affect how safely systems can make decisions on the road.

The technical foundation is the NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion platform — a validated architecture that combines sensors, computing systems and software. It enables scaling from advanced driver assistance to fully autonomous systems. Hyundai’s in-house SDV platform will be integrated into this architecture, supporting continuous improvement through accumulated data.

Hyundai Motor Group is also focusing on developing its own AI models. NVIDIA’s infrastructure is used for processing large datasets and training these models, allowing Hyundai not only to adopt existing technologies but also to build its own AI capabilities over time.

The partnership builds on earlier cooperation. Hyundai and NVIDIA have been working together since at least 2025 on AI solutions, digital twins and manufacturing technologies. The new agreement shifts the focus directly toward autonomous driving and its commercial deployment.

Motional plays a key role in this strategy. The company is developing Level 4 robotaxi technology and has already been testing services using the all-electric IONIQ 5. This provides Hyundai with real-world operational data alongside its development efforts.

In a broader context, the move reflects a wider shift toward AI-defined vehicles. NVIDIA is already working with other automakers such as Mercedes-Benz and BYD, offering a unified technology stack for autonomous driving. Expanding the partnership with Hyundai strengthens this ecosystem and highlights how competition is increasingly centered on data, computing power and algorithm performance.

The final structure, scale and timeline of the partnership are yet to be confirmed. However, the direction is clear: a scalable platform that connects mass-market vehicles and robotaxi services within a single autonomous driving ecosystem.
