Skoda L&K 130: hybrid student concept tailored for cycling teams
Skoda students unveil L&K 130, a Superb-based hybrid pickup designed for cycling events, with custom features and tribute to the brand's bicycle heritage.
In Mlada Boleslav, a decade-long tradition reached its milestone: students from the Skoda Auto Vocational School unveiled their tenth anniversary creation—the L&K 130, a hybrid pickup based on the Superb Combi, purpose-built for cycling events.
Far from being just another concept, the L&K 130 is the first student-built car to feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Retaining the core of the Superb iV—a 1.5 TSI petrol engine paired with an electric motor for a combined 204 hp, and a 25.7 kWh battery—the car embraces a new design philosophy behind its familiar front end.
To accommodate bicycles, students removed the roof behind the C-pillar, replacing it with an electrically extendable cargo area. Two bikes are stored on movable rails that tilt 35 degrees when closed, both saving space and giving the car a dynamic silhouette. A third bike can be carried on the roof rack.
The body is finished in gold, red, black, and white—colors borrowed from the Laurin & Klement logo—and the “130 Years” branding is stitched into uniquely upholstered sport seats. It’s a tribute to Skoda’s origins in 1895, when founders Laurin and Klement began by building bicycles. Today, the brand continues this legacy as a long-time partner of the Tour de France, where the L&K 130 will make its appearance this year.
Students relied on 3D printing for several bespoke components, including an overhead mesh console for snacks and supplies. The redesigned rear right door slides backward and swings outward, ensuring safer exits during races without obstructing passing cyclists—a clever and thoughtful solution.
The vehicle comes equipped with internet connectivity, a radio transmitter, and a built-in beverage cooler—features tailored for race-day support. In total, 28 students, guided by Skoda engineers and instructors, devoted over 2,000 hours to the project.
Though Skoda has not disclosed any production plans for the L&K 130 or its innovations, the model blurs the lines between academic exercise and practical concept. It proves that student ingenuity can go hand-in-hand with real-world automotive design.
