Bugatti W16 Mistral Caroline revealed as Sur Mesure project
Bugatti presented the one-off W16 Mistral Caroline, a bespoke Sur Mesure hypercar honoring a personal story. Explore design, details, and context.
Bugatti is closing the W16 era: the W16 Mistral roadster, the brand’s final production model powered by this engine, has received a unique interpretation — the ‘Caroline’ edition, created as a personal project dedicated to the owner’s daughter.
The car was developed through the Sur Mesure program, where each vehicle is individually crafted. The client, a long-time Bugatti customer, aimed to combine the character of a hypercar with a softer, more expressive aesthetic. The result is a concept built around floral inspiration, influenced by nature and elements of Haute Couture.
The significance of the project is reinforced by the model itself. The W16 Mistral is the final road-going Bugatti equipped with the W16 engine, which has defined the brand since 2005 in models such as the Veyron and Chiron. In this configuration, it retains its key characteristics: an 8.0-liter quad-turbo engine producing 1,600 hp, all-wheel drive, and a speed potential exceeding 400 km/h. In this context, bespoke versions like ‘Caroline’ become part of the closing chapter of this technological lineage.
The exterior design focuses on subtle detail. Its defining color is a specially developed Lavender finish, created through extensive testing and refinement. The tone shifts under light, moving across different shades of violet. The lower body features exposed carbon fiber tinted in violet, adding contrast and depth.
The most distinctive visual element is the rear wing, treated as a canvas. A hand-painted floral composition spans the surface, with multiple tones carefully layered, and the name “Caroline” placed at its center. Each stage required precise masking and a multi-layer painting process.
The interior continues the same narrative. Blanc and Minuit leather are combined with violet accents and carbon elements. Embroidery across the headrests and door panels is created using thousands of threads and layered techniques, forming detailed floral compositions. At the center of the cabin sits a gear selector featuring the Dancing Elephant, referencing Bugatti’s heritage and the work of Rembrandt Bugatti.
The ‘Caroline’ project reflects Bugatti’s approach, where a car extends beyond engineering into personal design. Alongside the W16 Mistral’s role as the final model of its kind, such creations mark a transition toward a new phase for the brand.
