Mercedes-Benz marks the 600,000th G-Class with the electric G 580 in Graz, showcasing its iconic design, customization options, and future in electrification.

Mercedes-Benz has reached a major milestone as the 600,000th G-Class rolled off the production line at the Graz plant. The milestone vehicle is the all-electric G 580 with EQ Technology, finished in Obsidian Black Metallic, symbolizing both the enduring legacy of this off-road icon and the brand’s move into electrification.

Since its debut in 1979, the G-Class has evolved from a utilitarian vehicle into a luxury lifestyle symbol while preserving its distinctive character. Round headlights, a boxy silhouette, and a rear-mounted spare wheel remain defining elements, while its ladder-frame construction, permanent all-wheel drive, and locking differentials continue to ensure exceptional off-road performance.

The electric G 580 is powered by four independent motors producing a combined output of about 579 hp, paired with a 116 kWh battery. Features like G-Turn and G-Steering enhance maneuverability, while the G-Roar system delivers a signature acoustic experience.

Since 2019, customers have been able to personalize their vehicles through the MANUFAKTUR program, which offers over a million customization possibilities. Starting in 2024, up to 20,000 paint colors became available, including heritage shades inspired by the first W 460 series. More than 90% of G-Class buyers now choose at least one bespoke option, averaging three per vehicle.

Special editions have also played a significant role in the G-Class story. Two years ago, the 500,000th model was celebrated with a unique version, and in 2023, the limited Edition STRONGER THAN THE 1980s paid tribute to the 1980s original. Mercedes-Benz has hinted that this tradition of exclusive models will continue.

Although the electric version currently sells in smaller numbers compared to its petrol and diesel counterparts, the production of the 600,000th G-Class underscores the model’s lasting popularity. Analysts believe that its iconic
