Mercedes-Benz presents the AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+ with a revised inline-six engine, updated AWD system and Drift Mode. Explore specs, performance and positioning.

The return to a six-cylinder engine defines the new Mercedes-AMG GLC 53 4MATIC+, marking a clear shift in AMG’s strategy. After experimenting with four-cylinder hybrid performance setups, the brand brings back a 3.0-liter inline-six producing 449 hp and up to 640 Nm with overboost. The SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds, while the optional AMG Driver’s Package raises the top speed to 270 km/h.

This move reflects a broader response to market expectations. Previous top versions of the GLC adopted complex four-cylinder hybrid systems, but the new GLC 53 returns to a more traditional AMG formula. At the same time, it enters the market at a significantly lower price point, starting from around €85,000 compared to over €120,000 for earlier GLC 63 S models. The result is a performance SUV positioned for a wider audience without abandoning its dynamic focus.

The engine itself has been extensively reworked. A new cylinder head, revised intake and exhaust ports, a different camshaft, an updated intake system and a new intercooler all contribute to sharper response and improved revving characteristics. The powertrain is complemented by an electric compressor and a 17 kW starter-generator, forming a mild hybrid setup paired with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 9-speed transmission.

The AMG Performance 4MATIC+ system plays a central role in shaping the driving experience. Under normal conditions, the vehicle operates primarily as rear-wheel drive, sending power to the front axle only when needed. Combined with an electronically controlled rear differential, this layout enables the introduction of Drift Mode—a first for an AMG SUV—available through the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package alongside a dedicated RACE mode.

Handling is further enhanced by standard rear-axle steering. At lower speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front, improving maneuverability, while at higher speeds they turn in the same direction for increased stability. The system allows up to 2.5 degrees of rear-wheel steering.

In terms of performance, the GLC 53 positions itself above rivals such as the Audi SQ5 and BMW X3 M50 in key metrics like power and acceleration. However, its WLTP fuel consumption of around 9.2–9.9 l/100 km and CO₂ classification in class G highlight a clear emphasis on performance rather than efficiency.

At launch, the model is offered with a limited Golden Accents package, featuring techgold design elements, 21-inch forged wheels and extended exterior detailing. A wide range of optional equipment—from AMG TRACK PACE to the Burmester 3D sound system—adds further customization potential, allowing the vehicle to be tailored to different driving preferences.

With the GLC 53 4MATIC+, Mercedes-AMG establishes a new balance point in its lineup. It delivers less peak output than previous flagship versions but compensates with greater accessibility, a return to a six-cylinder layout and a set of technologies that bring it closer to the brand’s core performance identity.
