Volvo’s Unique Turn Signal Click Inspired by Nature

Volvo engineers crafted a distinctive turn signal sound by snapping twigs, blending nature with modern car design for a unique driving experience.
In older cars, the clicking sound of the turn signal was the result of a purely mechanical process. When the indicator was activated, an electric current heated a bimetallic strip, causing it to bend and break the circuit. As it cooled, the strip returned to its original position, and the cycle repeated, producing the familiar rhythmic “tick-tick” that accompanied every maneuver.
Modern vehicles work differently—the sound is now generated artificially and played through the dashboard speakers. But Volvo’s engineers felt this wasn’t enough for a car with character. They wanted even a small element like the turn signal to have its own distinctive identity.
To achieve this, the team ventured into a Swedish forest and collected around 300 dry twigs. Back in the office, they snapped them one by one, listening intently until they discovered the one lively, resonant click that could become the brand’s sonic signature.
The chosen sound was taken to a studio, cleaned up, slightly slowed to about 150 clicks per minute, and enhanced with subtle effects. As a result, an ordinary turn signal was transformed into a carefully crafted audio detail that brought a touch of nature and Volvo’s signature style into the driving experience.
This philosophy extends to Volvo’s electric vehicles. In the XC40 Recharge, soft vocal samples accompany low-speed movement, while acceleration and reversing are paired with calm, unobtrusive tones. This not only enhances the atmosphere of comfort but also improves road safety.
