Dongfeng Nissan launches NX8 electric SUV in China

Dongfeng Nissan has launched the new NX8 in China, a mid-size electrified SUV capable of delivering up to 650 km of range and recovering around 300 km in just six minutes. The model arrives with both fully electric and range-extended powertrains, signaling a strategy to address multiple usage scenarios within a single vehicle.

The NX8 becomes the third model in Nissan’s N Series following the N6 and N7 sedans, and the first SUV in this lineup. It was developed specifically for the Chinese market, where demand for electrified crossovers remains among the highest globally. As a result, the vehicle combines advanced technology, spacious packaging, and pricing positioned around the 200,000 RMB segment.

The fully electric version is offered with 73 kWh and 81 kWh battery options, producing up to 250 kW of power and delivering a maximum range of 650 km under CLTC conditions. Its 800-volt architecture and support for 5C ultra-fast charging place it among a limited number of foreign-brand SUVs in China with such capabilities, enabling rapid energy recovery during short charging stops.

The range-extended variant pairs an electric motor with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine acting as a generator. This configuration enables up to 310 km of electric-only driving and a total range reaching 1,450 km, offering flexibility for long-distance travel without full reliance on charging infrastructure.

In terms of size, the NX8 approaches large family SUV proportions, measuring nearly 4.9 meters in length with a 2,917 mm wheelbase. The interior emphasizes comfort for all occupants, with generous rear headroom, a luggage capacity exceeding 700 liters, and additional features such as an onboard refrigerator and a dedicated pet protection mode.

The cabin is centered around technology, featuring dual 15.6-inch displays, Nissan OS 2.0, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chipset, and an augmented reality head-up display. Driver assistance is supported by automated parking functions and a system co-developed with Momenta.

Safety remains a core focus. The NX8 is equipped with the Cloud Shield 2.0 battery system using CATL cells, tested across 146 safety scenarios, along with 24-hour cloud monitoring. The body structure incorporates ultra-high-strength steel rated up to 2000 MPa, enhancing crash protection and structural rigidity.

Production has already started in Guangzhou, with the model rolling off the assembly line in early 2026. Sales began on April 8, while deliveries of the range-extended versions are scheduled from mid to late May.

The NX8 highlights how Nissan is adapting to the rapid evolution of China’s electrified vehicle market. In a segment dominated by local manufacturers, its combination of fast charging, dual powertrain options, and extensive equipment positions it as a competitive entrant. Export potential is already being considered, although specific markets and timelines have not yet been confirmed.
