Volkswagen launches limited ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE in Saxony

Volkswagen begins production of the limited ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE in Saxony, a 1990-unit special model inspired by the Golf II Fire and Ice of the 1990s.
Volkswagen has launched series production of the ID.3 GTX FIRE+ICE at its plants in Zwickau and Dresden. Limited to 1,990 units, the edition pays direct tribute to the Golf II Fire and Ice from the early 1990s, which became an unexpected hit with more than 16,000 cars sold and achieved cult status among Volkswagen enthusiasts.
The new project once again brings together the automaker and sportswear brand BOGNER FIRE+ICE. The partnership goes beyond the name: the model features a striking Ultra Violet Metallic paint with a Flaming Red roof frame, FIRE+ICE graphics on the pillars, and a spoiler with the emblematic logo. Inside, the design is split between “On Fire Red” for the driver’s side and “Keep Cool Blue” for the passenger’s side. The sport seats are quilted in a style reminiscent of Bogner down jackets, complete with zipper-inspired detailing.
Technically, the special edition comes with two power levels: 210 kW (286 PS) and 240 kW (326 PS), both delivering 545 Nm of torque. The more powerful version accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds, with electronic regulation only kicking in at 200 km/h. A sports DCC chassis is standard on the 240 kW variant and optional on the 210 kW version. Power is provided by a 79 kWh net battery, which can charge at up to 185 kW on DC fast chargers. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes around 26 minutes, and the WLTP range reaches up to 591 km.
In Germany, prices start at €56,020. The first ten vehicles are scheduled to appear at the IAA and at the annual ID. Treffen in Locarno. Beyond Europe, the ID.3 from Saxony will also be available in South America. Since late 2019, more than 350,000 units of the ID.3 have rolled off the production lines, and the model is now sold in nearly 40 countries worldwide.
The FIRE+ICE launch also carries symbolic weight for Saxony. Over the past years, Volkswagen, Audi and CUPRA have built more than one million electric vehicles in the region, securing thousands of jobs. Company and union representatives underline that such special models not only support production capacity but also reinforce the identity of the “Saxony original.”
With new sporty electric hatchbacks from competitors such as the Cupra Born VZ and MG4 XPower entering the market, Volkswagen’s limited edition stands as a statement of both heritage and ambition. Whether this return to the spirit of the 1990s will match the success of its predecessor will depend on customer response, but public attention to the model is already evident.
