Alfa Romeo presents Tonale and Stelvio at New York Auto Show 2026
Alfa Romeo showcased Tonale and Stelvio at the New York Auto Show 2026, highlighting design, performance, and its current SUV strategy in key global markets.
Alfa Romeo placed its focus on two key SUVs — Tonale and Stelvio — at one of the world’s oldest automotive events, the New York International Auto Show, which marked its 124th edition in 2026. The brand once again took center stage at the exhibition, held from April 3 to April 12 in New York, reaffirming its presence on the global automotive scene.
The choice of models reflects the current structure of Alfa Romeo’s lineup. Tonale and Stelvio now form the backbone of the brand’s SUV offering, a segment that remains one of the most competitive worldwide. Tonale targets the premium compact SUV category, aiming at a broader audience, while Stelvio continues to represent the brand’s more performance-oriented identity. Together, they illustrate how Alfa Romeo balances expansion with heritage.
The spotlight was on the updated Tonale. The model features a revised front design with a more pronounced fascia and the signature scudetto grille inspired by the iconic Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. For the U.S. market, it is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine producing 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard Q4 all-wheel drive. In contrast, European markets continue to offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions, highlighting regional differences in product strategy.
Stelvio remains a key pillar in the midsize SUV segment. Equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine delivering 280 horsepower and Q4 all-wheel drive, the model emphasizes handling and driving dynamics. Its suspension setup, with a double-wishbone front and multilink rear configuration, reinforces its sporty character. The manufacturer has also confirmed that the current generation of Stelvio, alongside the Giulia sedan, will remain available through 2027.
The broader context of the event adds to the significance of Alfa Romeo’s presence. The New York Auto Show has long served as a platform for major reveals and strategic positioning. For Alfa Romeo, this is particularly relevant as the brand works to strengthen its position in key markets such as North America, while facing mixed sales trends — growth in Europe during 2025 and a decline in the U.S. at the start of 2026.
In this setting, the appearance of Tonale and Stelvio at the show reinforces their role as the brand’s core products in the near term. Through these models, Alfa Romeo continues to define its place in a highly competitive SUV landscape, maintaining a balance between design, performance, and market reach.
