Honda Prelude 2026 debuts with hybrid powertrain and S+ Shift

Honda reveals the 2026 Prelude, a hybrid coupe with 200 hp, Civic Type R chassis hardware and new S+ Shift mode, arriving in the U.S. in late fall 2025.

Honda has officially revealed the sixth-generation Prelude, marking the return of its iconic sports coupe after more than two decades. The North American debut highlighted the car’s unique positioning: for the first time, Honda’s two-motor hybrid system is paired with Civic Type R chassis hardware.

The focus is clearly on driving enjoyment. The hybrid setup combines two powerful electric motors with a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, delivering 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft of torque. The new Honda S+ Shift drive mode enhances the experience by simulating a performance transmission with rev-matched downshifts and gear holding, bringing a stronger sense of driver engagement.

The Prelude is engineered as a grand tourer, balancing agility and comfort. Civic Type R suspension and brakes have been tuned specifically for this model, while four selectable driving modes—Comfort, GT, Sport, and Individual—allow drivers to adapt to different conditions. The styling underscores its character, with a low stance, double-bubble roof, blue highlights, and distinctive Brembo brakes.

History gives extra significance to the Prelude’s comeback. From 1978 to 2001, five generations of the model introduced groundbreaking technologies, including the world’s first production four-wheel steering system and later the ATTS torque transfer system. Now, the legacy continues with an electrified chapter.

Fuel economy ratings have not yet been released, but Honda has confirmed plans to expand hybrid sales to over 60% of its U.S. lineup in the coming years. The Prelude will join the Accord, CR-V, and Civic hybrids as the brand’s fourth such offering in North America. Sales begin in Japan on September 5, 2025, at 6,179,800 yen, with U.S. availability expected by late fall 2025 and European sales in early 2026.

Industry observers note that the new Prelude faces few direct rivals. It is often compared to cars like the Toyota GR86 or Subaru BRZ, and sometimes even the Toyota Prius, though with a very different focus. Honda’s choice to embrace this niche could prove advantageous as demand grows for sporty coupes with an electrified edge.
