Vauxhall Astra Plug-In Hybrid and GSE Get More Power and Range

Vauxhall has opened orders for the refreshed Astra Plug-In Hybrid and Astra Sports Tourer Plug-In Hybrid, enhancing both battery capacity and transmission without a price increase. The new 17.2-kWh battery replaces the previous 12.4-kWh unit, boosting electric range to 52 miles (WLTP). Combined with a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine, total output now reaches 195PS and 360Nm of torque. The hatchback accelerates from 0 to 62mph in 7.9 seconds, making it quicker than the fully electric and 48V hybrid variants.

Equally significant is the introduction of a new seven-speed e-DCT7 gearbox, replacing the previous automatic transmission. The extra gear is tuned for the increased performance, improving smoothness and response. Drivers can choose between Hybrid, Sport, and Electric modes. The latter enables near-silent, zero-emissions driving, while a 7.4-kW wallbox charges the battery from 20 to 80% in just 2 hours 53 minutes.

The Astra range now offers a full spectrum of powertrains: petrol, 48V hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric. Prices remain aligned with the previous generation, starting at £39,715 OTR. For company car drivers, the extended electric range moves the Astra Plug-In Hybrid GS 195PS into the lower 9% BiK bracket, improving tax efficiency.

The sporty Astra GSE and Sports Tourer GSE also gain the new battery, maintaining their performance focus. A 10mm lower chassis, unique steering calibration, and a tuned engine sound deliver a more engaging drive. Power is increased to 225PS, with 0–62mph achieved in 7.6 seconds.

Inside, GSE models feature Alcantara-trimmed sports seats and a panoramic roof, while top-spec Ultimate trims add Intelli-HUD head-up display, Intelli-Lux pixel headlights, and a comprehensive suite of driver-assist systems.

The Astra remains a key player in the plug-in hybrid segment, and this latest update marks a significant step in Vauxhall’s electrification journey. Production continues at the Rüsselsheim plant, which builds all Astra variants. Deliveries in the UK are scheduled to begin in November. With over 84,000 public charge points now available as part of the Electric Streets of Britain initiative, the Astra Plug-In Hybrid becomes an even more compelling choice for drivers ready to embrace electrified mobility.
