Chrysler recalls 6,605 Ram 2500 trucks after a steering module fault may disable ESC. Check details, affected models, and what this means for drivers.

Chrysler is recalling 6,605 2026 Ram 2500 pickups in the United States after a defect was found that can abruptly disable the electronic stability control system (ESC) while the vehicle is in motion. The issue stems from a fault in the steering column control module (SCCM), which may fail without warning, leaving drivers unaware until an ESC warning light appears after the system restarts.

The affected vehicles were built between September 13 and November 15, 2025, when specific SCCM units — numbered 68600228AH, 68600229AH and 68600231AH — supplied by Kostal of America were installed on the assembly line. FCA estimates that about 0.5% of vehicles from this batch may carry the defect. Even so, the risk is considered significant because ESC plays a critical role in maintaining vehicle stability by automatically adjusting braking and engine output when traction is lost.

The importance of the recall lies in the nature of the failure. ESC is a mandatory safety feature under FMVSS No. 126, which requires the system to remain operational at all times while driving. A shutdown of ESC represents non-compliance with this regulation and is officially linked to an increased risk of crashes, particularly during sudden manoeuvres or on slippery surfaces.

This case also fits into a broader pattern. Previous FCA recalls have involved defects in systems such as ABS and other electronic modules that could also lead to ESC deactivation. The SCCM itself has been subject to recalls before, including cases where its failure was associated with other safety systems, such as airbags.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the faulty modules free of charge with updated versions. VIN checks will become available starting April 23, 2026, and owner notifications are scheduled to begin on May 7. The recall campaign is identified internally under code 36D.

For heavy-duty pickups like the Ram 2500, the implications are particularly serious. These vehicles operate with higher mass and often tow heavy loads, making stability control essential. Even a brief loss of ESC functionality can significantly increase the likelihood of losing control.
