Three Kia Models Top U.S. News 2026 Hybrid and Electric Rankings
U.S. News & World Report names three Kia models best in 2026 hybrid and electric categories. See which vehicles ranked highest and why.
Three Kia models simultaneously topped the U.S. News & World Report rankings, an uncommon outcome even for major automakers. In the 2026 Best Hybrid and Electric Car awards, the 2027 Telluride HEV, 2026 Niro HEV, and 2026 Sportage Plug-in Hybrid each secured first place in their respective segments.
The results come from a large-scale evaluation process: U.S. News editors assessed 138 vehicles across 19 categories, comparing them based on overall rankings, fuel economy, driving range, and EPA data. Winning multiple categories in this context points not only to strong individual products, but also to a broader, consistent electrification strategy.
Particular attention was drawn to the new Telluride HEV, the first hybrid version of a model already established as one of the most popular three-row SUVs in the U.S. market. Its turbocharged 2.5-liter hybrid powertrain, paired with a 1.65-kWh battery and dual electric motors, produces 329 horsepower and delivers up to 35 mpg combined. The driving range reaches up to 637 miles, highlighting its suitability for long-distance use.
In smaller segments, Kia focuses on efficiency. The Niro HEV, equipped with a 1.6-liter engine and electric motor producing 139 horsepower, achieves up to 53 mpg, making it one of the most fuel-efficient options in its class. The Sportage Plug-in Hybrid takes a different approach, offering 268 horsepower, all-wheel drive, and an electric-only range of about 34 miles.
Pricing across these models spans a wide range, from roughly $27,000 for the Niro HEV to over $46,000 for the Telluride HEV. This allows Kia to cover multiple segments, from entry-level hybrids to larger, more capable family SUVs.
Sales data provides additional context. In 2025, Kia recorded its highest annual sales in the United States, with electrified vehicle demand increasing by 24%. The Sportage, in particular, posted strong growth and became the brand’s top-selling model in the market.
Looking ahead, Kia’s long-term plans reinforce this direction. The company aims to increase global hybrid sales from 690,000 units in 2026 to 1.1 million by 2030, while expanding its hybrid lineup. In the U.S., the number of hybrid models is expected to double.
Against this backdrop, the U.S. News awards appear less like a one-off achievement and more like a reflection of a broader shift. Kia is steadily building a portfolio where hybrids and plug-in hybrids play a central role between traditional gasoline vehicles and fully electric models.
