Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5 Review: Plug-in 4x4 With Power and Luxury

Explore the Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5, a plug-in hybrid 4x4 with 675 hp, diff locks, premium interior and advanced off-road modes, reviewed by Doug DeMuro.
The BYD Leopard 7 is far more than just another electric crossover — it is BYD’s declaration that it’s ready to compete with the world’s top automakers. In just a few years, the company has evolved from a domestic Chinese brand into a global EV powerhouse, and this model is the ultimate showcase of that transformation.
The first impression is all about design. The Leopard 7 features sharp split LED headlights, sculpted air channels, and a coupe-like roofline that blends futuristic style with sporty confidence. At the rear, a full-width light bar and integrated spoiler complete the athletic, high-tech look, making the SUV stand out whether you’re overtaking or being overtaken.
Inside, the cabin feels like a blend of a futuristic lounge and a driver-focused cockpit. The centerpiece is a massive rotating infotainment screen that seamlessly switches between portrait and landscape modes. Premium materials — soft-touch surfaces, vegan leather, brushed metal — and customizable ambient lighting create a truly upscale atmosphere. The seats combine comfort and support, with heating, ventilation, and even massage available on higher trims.
Technology is everywhere. The Leopard 7 comes equipped with advanced driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control, lane centering, automated parking, and semi-autonomous highway driving. 5G connectivity ensures smooth updates and real-time navigation, while rear passengers enjoy their own displays, USB-C charging, and climate zones.
Performance is where the Leopard 7 truly shines. In its dual-motor AWD version, it sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, putting it in sports car territory. The e-platform 3.0 architecture and low-mounted Blade battery provide excellent balance and agility. With a range of over 500 km and ultra-fast DC charging that takes the battery from 30% to 80% in about 20 minutes, it is as practical as it is thrilling.
Perhaps most disruptive is its pricing. Positioned well below the Tesla Model Y Performance, Audi Q4 e-tron, and BMW X3, while offering similar or better performance and technology, the Leopard 7 forces buyers to rethink their options.
BYD’s global push ensures that this model will be seen not just in China but in Europe, Latin America, Southeast Asia, and beyond. The Leopard 7 is not just an SUV — it is a signal that the EV market is entering a new era, where Chinese automakers are setting the standard rather than following it.
