Volvo Trucks Strengthens Its Position as the Leading Electric Truck Manufacturer

Volvo Trucks maintains its dominance in the electric truck market, securing a 47% share in Europe and over 40% in North America. Learn about its latest models, market impact, and future developments.
Volvo Trucks has once again demonstrated its dominance in the electric heavy-duty truck sector, solidifying its position as the largest manufacturer in both Europe and North America. In 2024, the company captured an impressive 47% share of the European market, while in North America, Volvo accounted for more than 40% of all registered electric heavy-duty trucks.
In total, 1,970 new Volvo electric trucks were registered across Europe, with Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, and Switzerland emerging as key markets. This success reflects the growing demand for sustainable transportation solutions, as businesses increasingly transition away from diesel-powered fleets.
Volvo’s strong market position is not only due to its extensive presence but also its technological advancements. The Volvo FH Electric, one of the company’s flagship models, offers a range of up to 300 km per charge, supported by battery packs reaching 540 kWh. For urban and regional transport, the Volvo FL Electric provides a range of up to 300 km and a gross vehicle weight of 16 tons.
Looking ahead, Volvo is expanding its electric lineup. A new long-range electric truck capable of 600 km per charge is expected to hit the market in the coming years, making interregional freight transport more viable and further closing the gap between electric and diesel-powered trucks.
Despite Volvo’s strong performance, the lack of charging infrastructure remains a major hurdle for widespread electric truck adoption. Experts estimate that by 2030, Europe will require over 300,000 charging stations for commercial trucks—far exceeding the current number. In North America, Volvo has partnered with private companies to accelerate the expansion of charging networks.
While demand for electric trucks continues to rise, the transition to zero-emission transportation will require substantial investments, not just in vehicle production but also in the infrastructure necessary to support them.
Volvo Trucks is setting the pace for the electric trucking industry. Continued investments in technology, infrastructure, and model expansion are likely to secure the company’s leadership for years to come. However, a fully electrified trucking future will require not only commitment from manufacturers but also the support of infrastructure providers and policymakers.
