Renault has introduced the AmpR Small platform, designed exclusively for electric vehicles. Learn how this innovation enhances the Renault 5 E-Tech’s design, efficiency, and driving experience.

Renault is making a bold move into the new era of electric vehicles, and one of its headline releases for 2024 is the Renault 5 E-Tech. Inspired by the classic Renault 5, this stylish compact hatchback is designed to meet the demands of modern drivers: sustainability, an engaging driving experience, and cutting-edge technology. At its core is the new AmpR Small platform, developed by Renault’s subsidiary, Ampere. This architecture provides greater design flexibility, enhanced driving dynamics, and optimized energy efficiency.

Unlike many EVs built on repurposed combustion-engine platforms, AmpR Small was engineered specifically for electric vehicles. This allows for better space utilization, an optimized weight distribution, and a lower center of gravity, all of which improve handling and ride comfort.

As a result, Renault 5 E-Tech is not just about sustainability—it aims to be a fun-to-drive car. Its improved road grip and agile dynamics set it apart from the competition.

The model is available in two configurations:

  • Renault 5 E-Tech 40kWh (95 hp) – designed for urban use, offering up to 300 km of range on a single charge.
  • Renault 5 E-Tech 52kWh (150 hp) – a more powerful version with up to 400 km of range and 0–100 km/h acceleration in 8 seconds.

When it comes to charging, Renault supports fast charging up to 100 kW, allowing the car to recharge from 15% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

In its segment, Renault 5 E-Tech competes with models like the Peugeot e-208, Citroën e-C3, and Mini Cooper E. Peugeot e-208 offers slightly more range (up to 340 km), but Renault provides a more competitive price point. Meanwhile, the Citroën e-C3 lags in terms of performance, and the Mini Cooper E targets a more premium audience.

Renault aims to strike a balance between affordability, performance, and practicality, making the 5 E-Tech one of the most well-rounded compact EVs on the market.

One of the standout features of the Renault 5 E-Tech is its bi-directional charging capability (V2G). This allows the car not only to draw energy but also to return it to the grid, helping stabilize electricity demand and integrate renewable energy sources.

Renault 5 E-Tech is more than just a nostalgic tribute to a legendary model—it’s a modern, well-thought-out, and competitive electric vehicle that has the potential to become a major player in the compact EV market.
