In an increasingly crowded hybrid SUV market, Great Wall Motor has made a decisive move. In April 2025, the company unveiled the second-generation Haval Xiaolong Max AWD plug-in hybrid, and the response was immediate — over 16,000 firm orders on the first day alone. This is not just a product launch; it is a statement of intent to lead the segment.
The exterior design follows what GWM calls its “natural rhythmic aesthetics” philosophy. The SUV features a futuristic front with 72-matrix LED headlights connected by a full-width light strip, while the rear is defined by dramatic galaxy-style tail lights with 332 ultra-red LEDs, glowing at a 628 nm wavelength. A floating roofline, sleek roof rails, and dual-color 19-inch wheels emphasize its athletic character. Buyers can choose from five body colors, including white, black, gray, and two shades of green — Aurora and Forest.
Measuring 4,780 mm in length with a 2,810 mm wheelbase, the Xiaolong Max sits firmly in the midsize SUV segment, promising stability and generous cabin space. Inside, the cabin is centered around a T-shaped layout with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.6-inch central display, and an optional head-up display on higher trims. The Coffee OS 3 infotainment system supports voice commands, facial recognition, OTA updates, and even a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.
Comfort takes center stage: ventilated and massaging front seats, heated rear seats with adjustable backrests, 64-color ambient lighting, wireless charging, and a heated steering wheel make the interior both practical and luxurious. With 28 storage spaces and a trunk that expands from 540 L to 1,366 L with the rear seats folded, it is ready for everything from city commutes to weekend getaways.
The highlight is the powertrain. The proprietary Hi4 AWD plug-in hybrid setup pairs a 1.5-liter gasoline engine (114 hp) with two electric motors for a combined 319 hp and 595 Nm of torque, managed through a two-speed DHT transmission. It sprints from 0–100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, reaches a top speed of 180 km/h, and consumes just 0.97 L/100 km on the WLTC cycle. Two LFP battery packs are available: 18.7 kWh with 110 km of electric range and 27.5 kWh with 165 km. Fast charging from 30–80% takes only 20–30 minutes.
With its blend of performance, technology, and affordability — priced between 131,800 and 169,800 yuan (roughly $18,000–23,300) — the Xiaolong Max positions itself as a market disruptor. If early demand is any indication, this SUV could become one of the most talked-about hybrid models of 2025, both in China and internationally.
