Honda Prelude revival confirmed with Civic Type R technology

Honda confirms 2026 Prelude hybrid coupe with Civic Type R suspension, Brembo brakes and S+ Shift system, blending sporty handling with everyday comfort.
Honda has officially confirmed the return of the Prelude, a legendary nameplate that will reappear as a hybrid grand touring sports coupe in late 2025. The sixth-generation model marks the first time the Prelude will feature electrification, positioning it as both a nod to tradition and a step toward the brand’s future.
The new Prelude borrows heavily from the Civic Type R’s celebrated engineering. It adopts the wide front and rear tracks, Brembo front brakes, and, most notably, the Dual-Axis Strut front suspension — a design previously reserved only for Type R models. Honda has tailored these components for a GT-focused driving experience that blends precision handling with everyday comfort.
Under the hood lies Honda’s two-motor hybrid system, already used in the Civic Hybrid, winner of the 2025 North American Car of the Year award. Paired with the innovative S+ Shift system, it mimics the feel of a traditional transmission to enhance driving engagement. Media outlets suggest output could reach around 200 horsepower, though Honda has yet to release official performance figures such as acceleration, top speed, or efficiency ratings.
Inside, reports point to a digital instrument cluster and a central display supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, complemented by premium audio options. Japanese sources mention an estimated starting price of about 6.18 million yen (roughly $41,600), while German publications anticipate pricing near €50,000 for Europe. For the U.S. market, Honda has not yet announced figures.
The revival of the Prelude plays a symbolic role in Honda’s broader electrification strategy. The company aims for 100% of sales in North America to be electrified vehicles by 2040. Within this transition, the Prelude represents an “emotional” model — proof that driving excitement can thrive alongside hybrid technology.
The Prelude’s heritage spans five generations produced from the late 1970s until 2001. With innovations such as four-wheel steering and a reputation among enthusiasts, the model earned a strong place in Honda’s history. Its return combines that legacy with modern hybrid engineering, offering both continuity and a glimpse of what lies ahead.
