Rivian Introduces Software Update for R1T and R1S: More Range, Improved Features

Rivian’s latest software update increases the R1T and R1S driving range by 16 miles, enhances key fob functionality, and introduces a subscription model for digital services. Learn more about the changes.
Rivian is taking another step forward in enhancing its electric trucks and SUVs, offering owners new capabilities through a software update. The latest upgrade for the R1T and R1S doesn’t just improve range—it also enhances overall performance.
According to owners' reports, the update adds approximately 16 miles (about 26 km) of additional driving range. This increase is made possible by optimizing battery usage, allowing the system to unlock more of the available capacity. Additionally, the update improves key vehicle functions, such as making key fobs more responsive and energy-efficient.
However, these improvements come with a shift in Rivian’s business model. The company is introducing a subscription-based approach to digital services, including the Connect+ package, which costs $14.99 per month or $149.99 per year. Previously free features like Spotify integration and in-car Wi-Fi now require a paid subscription. Rivian is also considering adding performance-related software upgrades as part of its paid offerings.
These changes align with Rivian’s broader technology roadmap. Later this year, the automaker plans to introduce a hands-free driving assistance system, with a more advanced “eyes-off” version expected by 2026. This positions Rivian alongside competitors like Ford and General Motors, which already offer similar technologies.
The company’s progress is further bolstered by a strategic partnership with Volkswagen. The automotive giant is investing up to $5.8 billion in a joint venture, allowing both companies to accelerate software development and vehicle production. As a result, Rivian’s highly anticipated R2 model could hit the market sooner, while Volkswagen gains access to Rivian’s cutting-edge EV technology.
Ultimately, Rivian’s software updates are not just about improving existing vehicles—they’re part of a larger strategy for growth. By rolling out new digital services and advancing its technology stack, the company is gearing up for the next phase of competition in the electric vehicle market.
