BYD's largest vehicle recall to date underscores the delicate balance between China's rapid automotive expansion and the rising bar for safety standards. The company has announced a recall of more than 115,000 Tang and Yuan Pro vehicles produced between 2015 and 2022. According to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), certain models contain design defects and battery installation problems that could cause abnormal system performance.
The recall includes 44,535 Tang SUVs built from March 2015 to July 2017 and 71,248 Yuan Pro electric vehicles manufactured between February 2021 and August 2022. BYD has submitted a recall plan to SAMR, but details on repair timelines or compensation have not yet been released.
This is not BYD’s first large-scale recall. In January 2025, the company withdrew 6,843 Fang Cheng Bao 5 plug-in hybrid SUVs due to fire risks, and in September 2024, nearly 97,000 Dolphin and Yuan Plus models were recalled because of steering control defects that could lead to overheating.
Regulators said the latest issues stem from structural weaknesses that may cause abnormal performance under extreme conditions. Previous campaigns by BYD have involved physical adjustments to components or replacement of control units.
Investors are watching closely. BYD shares in Hong Kong dipped slightly following the announcement. Analysts note that the company’s reputation will depend on how efficiently it manages the recall and restores customer confidence in its electric fleet.
