At Japan Mobility Show 2025, Nissan unveiled the Sakura EV prototype featuring the Ao-Solar Extender, a roof-mounted solar system that adds up to 3,000 km annually.

Nissan unveiled an innovative prototype of its Sakura kei EV at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, featuring a solar-assisted charging system called the Ao-Solar Extender. The concept shows how solar power can be woven into daily EV use — not as an experiment, but as a practical enhancement.

The system integrates a fixed roof panel that collects energy even while driving, and a deployable section that unfolds when parked. In its expanded state, the setup produces around 500 watts of power. Nissan engineers estimate this could generate enough electricity for up to 3,000 kilometers of annual driving purely from sunlight. Given Japan’s high solar exposure, this solution could reduce reliance on the grid and simplify charging for short-distance commuters.

The Sakura has been Japan’s best-selling electric vehicle for three consecutive fiscal years, from FY2022 through FY2024. With its compact form and roughly 180 km driving range, it fits urban life seamlessly. The addition of the solar unit complements this use case: for many owners, sunlight could cover a substantial share of daily trips and provide emergency power when needed.
