How to Stay Safe and Comfortable on Winter Roads

Winter Driving Tips: Comfort, Safety, and Efficiency

Discover expert Skoda winter driving tips on heating, clothing, and car care for comfort, safety, and eco-friendly travel in cold weather.

Winter driving demands not only focus but also self-awareness and preparation. Experts from Škoda Auto remind drivers: warming up your car is important, but moderation is key. The ideal cabin temperature lies between 20 and 22 °C. Higher heat dries the air and causes fatigue, while cold leads to muscle stiffness and slower reactions. Studies by DGUV and BGN in Germany confirm that around 22 °C is considered comfortable for most drivers in winter.

Ventilation remains essential. Even in a warm cabin, it’s wise to crack a window or briefly use the air conditioning to refresh the air and prevent fogging. Automatic heating systems manage this best, balancing airflow and temperature where it’s needed most.

Clothing is another safety factor. According to ADAC, thick winter jackets reduce the effectiveness of seat belts and limit driver movement. Several thin layers—and no gloves while driving—are safer and more practical.

Before heading out, every car deserves a proper check. Winter tyres are mandatory in many European countries. ADAC and the European Consumer Centre note that in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, rules apply from November to April, while Italy and France enforce them regionally. Drivers should also check batteries, wipers, and filters, and carry essentials: an ice scraper, shovel, snow chains, gloves, and a warm layer.

Engine idling brings its own problems. Research from TRL shows that prolonged idling increases fuel use and CO₂ emissions without real benefit. The engine warms up faster when the car is moving, making early departure both economical and eco-friendly.

Škoda’s technology helps too. The Enyaq and Enyaq Coupé iV feature a heat pump that reduces battery strain and extends range in cold weather. The latest Kodiaq includes heated steering and mirrors for extra comfort.

As Škoda Motorsport drivers stress, smooth, predictive driving is crucial. On icy surfaces, braking distances can be up to ten times longer. Reading the road and anticipating grip changes are the hallmarks of safe winter driving.

With careful preparation and a calm mindset, winter needn’t be a hardship—it can be another rewarding part of the journey, full of clarity, safety, and quiet beauty.
