Ford is making its F-150 Lightning charge faster, and the best part? This improvement isn’t limited to new models. A software update that was first introduced for 2024 and 2025 model years is now being rolled out to 2022 and 2023 models as well.
What’s the upgrade? The maximum current for DC fast charging has been increased from 450A to 500A. In real-world conditions, this could shave off about five minutes from the 10-80% charge time, bringing it down from 45 to around 40 minutes under ideal circumstances. While this may not seem like a huge leap, every minute saved at a charging station makes a difference for EV owners.
The update is delivered over-the-air (OTA), meaning no dealership visit is required. Ford is rolling it out in batches, so if your Lightning hasn’t received the update yet, it should become available soon.
This move aligns with Ford’s strategy of keeping the F-150 Lightning competitive until its successor arrives in 2027. Since its debut, the Lightning has seen several upgrades, including a range boost in 2023 and the introduction of a new Flash trim for 2024.
While Ford hasn’t revealed any future software improvements for the Lightning, it’s clear that OTA updates are playing a key role in keeping the truck relevant. Given ongoing price adjustments and increasing competition in the electric truck segment, smart software enhancements like this could be crucial in maintaining buyer interest.
