Polestar is taking a significant step in the development of bidirectional charging by launching its first Vehicle-to-Home offer for Polestar 3 owners in California. Working with the Canadian company dcbel, the brand is introducing a solution that allows the electric vehicle to function not only as transportation but also as part of a home energy system. This approach opens the door to reduced energy costs, backup power during outages, and additional support for the local grid.
The central component of the offer is the dcbel Ara system, an intelligent home energy station that combines inverter functions, solar generation management, and both charging and discharging capabilities. Polestar highlights that the new technology enables the vehicle to act as a mobile energy source: charging during low-rate periods and powering the home when needed. Based on the PG&E EV2-A tariff structure, customers may save up to 1,300 USD per year, while the car can supply backup power for several days during outages.
Residents of California benefit from substantial public support. Various programs through the California Energy Commission cover a large portion of the equipment and installation costs, making the state a logical starting point for this rollout. Polestar describes the initiative as an initial step and plans to extend the offer to additional U.S. states in the future.
In parallel, the company is advancing bidirectional solutions in Europe. In cooperation with Zaptec, Polestar has introduced the Zaptec Go2 AC home charger, designed to be compatible with future bidirectional functionality. Although full AC-based bidirectional operation is still under development, the manufacturer sees this technology as an important component of its long-term strategy.
The growing interest in V2H systems is also tied to broader regional trends. California regularly faces planned power shutdowns linked to wildfire prevention measures, increasing the demand for reliable home backup solutions. Against this backdrop, Polestar positions the Polestar 3 as a key element in building a more resilient home energy ecosystem.
