Xpeng G6 Challenges Tesla Model Y in Australia with a 10-Year Warranty

Xpeng introduces a 10-year warranty for the G6 in Australia, aiming to compete with Tesla Model Y. Learn about its features, global expansion plans, and how it compares to Tesla.
Chinese automaker Xpeng is making aggressive moves in the international EV market, setting its sights on one of the most promising battlegrounds—Australia. To gain an edge over the competition, particularly Tesla's dominant Model Y, Xpeng is offering a major incentive: a 10-year warranty on its electric crossover, the Xpeng G6.
Customers who place an order between February 1 and June 30, 2025, will receive an extended 10-year vehicle warranty (up from the standard 5 years) covering 220,000 km (136,700 miles). Additionally, the battery warranty is increased from the industry-standard 8 years to 10 years. According to Xpeng, this deal represents savings of around $5,000 AUD.
The timing is no coincidence. A refreshed Tesla Model Y is set to arrive in Australia in spring 2025, reinforcing its status as the world’s best-selling EV. By offering an extended warranty, Xpeng aims to lure potential buyers away from Tesla’s ecosystem.
The Xpeng G6 is available in multiple configurations. The RWD version delivers 280 horsepower and a range of 435 km (270 miles). The Long Range model features a larger battery, increasing the driving range to 570 km (354 miles). For those craving performance, the AWD Performance trim cranks out 470 horsepower with 486 lb-ft of torque, offering a 550 km (341-mile) range.
One of the G6’s biggest advantages is its 800V SEPA 2.0 platform, which supports ultra-fast charging—a key distinction from Tesla’s 400V architecture.
Australia is just one stop in Xpeng’s aggressive expansion plan. The company is already present in 30 countries but aims to double that to 60 by the end of 2025. In the coming months, Xpeng plans to expand its footprint in Europe, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
In December 2024, Xpeng solidified its presence in Australia by shipping a second batch of G6 units and opening its first flagship showroom in the country. The growing dealership network suggests that Xpeng is in Australia for the long haul.
Can Xpeng’s extended warranty and cutting-edge technology dethrone the Tesla Model Y? That remains to be seen, but the Chinese brand is clearly positioning itself as a serious contender. Xpeng has already proven its ability to adapt rapidly to new markets, and its ambitions stretch far beyond a regional foothold.
If Xpeng succeeds, we may soon witness an even fiercer EV battle, ultimately benefiting consumers with better technology and more competitive pricing.
