A J.D. Power study finds that 94% of EV owners intend to buy another electric car, with only 12% considering a return to gas. Read more about the latest EV ownership trends.

Once a driver switches to an electric vehicle, the chances of returning to a gas-powered car are slim. That’s one of the key takeaways from J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience Ownership Study, which surveyed 6,164 EV and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) owners of 2024 and 2025 model-year vehicles.

The study found that 94% of EV owners are likely to consider another electric vehicle for their next purchase, while only 12% are open to switching back to an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids. These findings suggest that despite ongoing debates about EV policies and concerns over charging infrastructure, overall satisfaction with electric cars is on the rise.

This is further reflected in a significant improvement in user experience. Among mass-market EV owners, satisfaction jumped 86 points year-over-year, reaching 725 points on a 1,000-point scale. This surge is largely attributed to the continued expansion of charging infrastructure and the growing number of brands adopting Tesla’s Supercharger network, making public charging more seamless.

A similar trend can be seen in the plug-in hybrid segment. For the first time, J.D. Power included premium PHEVs as a separate category, with an average satisfaction score of 741—higher than mass-market EVs and just 15 points below premium EVs.

However, the EV market is shifting in other ways. Tesla’s sales have been declining, despite its dominant position, which is affecting the overall landscape. Even so, projections indicate that EVs could still gain 3% more market share in 2025, a notable development for states like Florida and Texas, where EV policies remain mixed but consumer interest continues to grow.

It’s clear that electric vehicles have established themselves as a compelling and reliable choice for consumers. If this trend continues, EV market share is likely to expand further in the coming years, despite the ongoing challenges related to infrastructure and technology.
